Margaret Estall

Estall's drawings are large format charcoal on paper works. They are enquiries into the botanical and how Pacific flora has been romanticised and commercialised from the time of the earliest European contact through to today. The dramatic chiaroscuro works focus on the floral garland, which has religious and cultural significance to both Polynesians and Europeans. The artists intentional reduction of colour and deliberate use of chiaroscuro modelling induce contrasting and emotive affects which she utilises to draw the willing participants into a much greater discussion about current environmental concerns.
